Shield is based on MAX3421E, which works as USB host (computer ports do work in this mode). It matches Arduino Pro Mini 3.3V/8 MHz. After soldering together (as seen on second picture) is a slight bigger than Arduino Pro Mini itself. It can acts as generic USB host breakout (with any microcontroller working in 3.3V logic or with proper level shifting)

It won’t work when soldered on Arduino Pro Mini 5V/16 MHz - more it will be damaged, so don’t do it ;)
