If you want to drive some device (e.g. a relay), where high current flows, then by using a optocoupler you can galvanically separate both circuits. In other words, there isn't any current flowing between these two circuits, thanks to optical coupling.
The 6N138 is a Fairchild's chip in DIP8 package.
