These diodes are mainly used as protection against induced current in relays or solenoids when they are switched off. Connecting such a diode in the right way protects the Arduino output from a voltage surge, which without it can reach several dozen (or even more) volts. This diode is quite slow, so for PWM-controlled motors, for example, a Schottky diode (/products/2401) would be better.
Another field of application is a diode protecting against incorrect polarity or a rectifier diode.
