LoRa - Long Range applications

Perfect for creating long range wireless communication that can exceed 2.4 GHz 802.15.4 and similar. Module is more flexible than Bluetooth LE. Does not require high power unlike WiFi and others. Version 868Mhz is suitable for EU countries. Module is being sold w/o antenna, choose one of available 868MHz antennas. Powering board and enabling radio w/o antena may damage radio.

The heart of the module - ATmega32u4 is clocked down to 8 MHz and working at 3.3 V. This chip has 32 KB of flash, 2 KB of RAM. It offers built-in USB to Serial communication, debugging and programming capabilities without the need for an external USB-Serial converter. It can also behave as HID device (mouse, keyboard, USB MIDI device, etc).

This board is equipped with a LiPo and Li-Ion charging circuit and a standard battery interface. It is fully compatible with Arduino. A white user led is tied to pin 13. An orange LED is used for charging status.

Module is based on HPD13A LoRA wireless module, using high-performance, highly integrated RF transceiver chip Semtech SX1276 design. Advanced LoRaTM spread spectrum communication technology to ensure greatly improved communication distance and anti-jamming capability of the module, while achieving a very low current consumption. In the LoRa® mode, the HPD13A provides higher reception sensitivity performance, more robust anti-jamming capability, and improved communication distance and reliability compared to similar transmit and receive modules on the market. In normal (G) FSK mode, it also provides industry-specific receiver sensitivity, as well as very high communication rates.

Changes in version 1.3

This board is in rev 1.3. Compared with previous (1.2) changes are minor, but having good impact on easy of use. On second product pictures you can see solder pads (near of LoRa module and antenna connector). These pads connects IO of LoRa module with IOs of ATmega32u4 (and board IO):

  • DIO1 - pin 5 (enabled by default)
  • DIO2 - pin 6 (disabled by default)
  • DIO3 - pin 14 (disabled by default)

With DIO1 connected to pin 5 you don’t have to do any modifications to get board sending data to TTN. Read this post on TTN forum.
