NO₂ level in the atmosphere vs human health

According to GIOŚ - Polish Chief Inspectorate of Environmental Protection, the allowed average annual exposure to nitrogen dioxide is 40 µg/m³ (about 20 ppb). Is that a lot? On the contrary, it is very, very little. To explain how little, I will use an analogy. It is like choosing just over 150 people from all the people on our planet (7.8 billion). And these 150 people compared to all mankind are our acceptable ratio of NO₂ level to the rest of air.

How to measure it?

To know if the atmospheric NO₂ concentration exceeds the allowed level, it is necessary to measure such negligible values. As you might guess, it is not easy. The Winsen ZE12A-NO2 electrochemical sensor can do this, but it must have good conditions for it. It should also be remembered that in the case of such small values, we work on the border of its sensitivity.

In our opinion, Winsen, while building this device, took care of almost everything. The electrochemical head is very accurate. AFE (analog frontend) and ADC (analog to digital converter) are built into the sensor itself. The sensor housing is made of metal, which makes it a miniature Faraday cage and shields electromagnetic interference, which is the bane of such accurate sensors. The ZE12A communicates with the environment via UART and analog DAC interfaces.

What influences the measurements?

Nitrogen dioxide measurements made by an electrochemical sensor can be affected by a number of factors. The ones that have the greatest impact are: the change in relative humidity and temperature, and the presence of ozone. NO₂ sensors are very often used in tandem with ozone (O₃) sensors.
