The XIAO series modules from SeeedStudio are quite popular—and for good reason. The size-to-capability ratio is very impressive.
We have a tiny board (21 x 17.8 mm!) with an ESP32-C6 on it. It features 512 kB of RAM and 4 MB of flash. The ESP32 is already well-known, and in the C6 version, we get two 32-bit RISC-V cores running at 160 MHz. That’s plenty of power, with the option to scale down the clock speed to 20 MHz to save energy while retaining all functions.
When it comes to connectivity, there’s WiFi and Bluetooth—something everyone expects—but since this is the C6, it’s not just ordinary WiFi 802.11n. Here, we have 802.11ax, also known as WiFi 6! The board includes a built-in ceramic antenna and a U.FL connector for attaching an external antenna.
Bluetooth is version 5, and additionally, there’s another engineering puzzle in the form of IEEE 802.15.4—marketed as Thread and Zigbee. These two IoT standards enable the XIAO ESP32-C6 to create fascinating devices that can communicate with various networks. One XIAO for almost any application!
A wide range of pins (1x UART, 1x LP_UART, 1x IIC, 1x LP_IIC, 1x SPI, 11x GPIO (PWM), 7x ADC, 1x SDIO) is available despite the small size (some pins are only accessible on the underside as soldering pads). To simplify its use in IoT projects, the module also includes a built-in circuit for charging lithium batteries (charging current: 100 mA).
