Is ozone harmful?

Yes, it is! Information that can be found on the [GIOŚ - Polish Chief Inspectorate of Environmental Protection] (https://powietrze.gios.gov.pl/pjp/content/annual_assessment_air_target_level) website, states that if 25 times a year exposed to a level above 120 µg/m³ (about 56 ppb) it may adversely affect our health. Below this threshold, using the current state of knowledge, it is unlikely that it will have a harmful effect on human health or the environment as a whole. Is it a lot? Maybe not as little as in the case of nitrogen dioxide, but still quite a challenge to accurately measure this value.

How to measure it?

To know if the atmospheric O₃ concentration exceeds the allowed level, it is necessary to measure such negligible values. As you might guess, it is not easy. The Winsen ZE12A-O₃ electrochemical sensor can do this.

In our opinion, Winsen, while building this device, took care of almost everything. The electrochemical head is very accurate. AFE (analog frontend) and ADC (analog to digital converter) are built into the sensor itself. The sensor housing is made of metal, which makes it a miniature Faraday cage and shields electromagnetic interference, which is the bane of such accurate sensors. The ZE12A communicates with the environment via UART and analog DAC interfaces.

What influences the measurements?

Ozone level measurements conducted by an electrochemical sensor can be affected by a number of factors. The ones that have the greatest impact are the change in relative humidity and temperature. Very often ozone sensors are used in pairs with nitrogen dioxide sensors (NO₂).
